THE MAGICIAN'S NEPHEW
C.S.LEWIS
Illustrated by PAULINE BAYNES
'This is a very important story,' explains the author right at the beginning, 'because it shows how all the comings and goings between our own world and the land of Narnia first began.'
It was one of the wettest and coldest summers for years as Polly and Diggory decided to explore the attic of the old, tall house. Carefully they stepped over the rafters and crept along the dark corridor that joined their two houses to the empty house beyond. What would they discover? Would it be haunted? Perhaps they might even discover a gang of desperate criminals. At any rate there must be some mystery to it. That is how they stumbled on the secret workroom of Diggory's Uncle Andrew, and when in a wild experiment he makes Polly vanish right out of the world, it is obvious that the dull summer was changing rapidly into a strange and totally thrilling adventure.

The whole adventure begins when Digory and Polly find themselves in eccentric Uncle Andrew's secret study. But when Uncle Andrew tricks Polly into touching the magic ring, she vanishes into the Other World. Digory is aghast, and determines immediately to go in search of her. Not only does he find Polly but together they listen to Aslan's song as he creates the enchanted world of Narnia, full of sun, trees, flowers, grass and animals.
